Steven Gerrard to Newcastle argued as Rangers boss told he has 'lots to prove' in Scotland

Arsenal legend Ray Parlour believes Rangers boss Steven Gerrard isn't the right fit for cash-rich Newcastle United.

The Toon Army are rejoicing after their Saudi Arabian-led takeover as Amanda Staveley sets about mapping out a brave, new future in the north east.

Mike Ashley's exit has Newcastle supporters believing again and Gerrard is the bookies favourite to succeed Steve Bruce, who is expected to depart in the wake of the £300m takeover.

But Parlour feels Gerrard isn't the the correct choice for now and reckons former Chelsea and Inter boss Antonio Conte would provide an instant jolt

Speaking on talkSPORT said: "Look, he's going to be Liverpool manager one day, but whether it is a stepping stone to (become) Liverpool manager, I don't know.

"I still think he has a lot to prove up in Scotland, saying 'can we win it again?'.

"I think someone like Conte, it would be a massive challenge for him."

And Alan Brazil - who floated Gerrard to Newcastle on Thursday - waxed lyrical about the size of the job that Gerrard currently holds in Glasgow.

But the Celtic fan concedes there could be a temptation if Staveley and Co come calling in search for for a figurehead to lead the great rebuild.

He said: " Rangers are a massive club, massive club.

"They don't have the same pressure per game (level of opposition), as Newcastle have in the Premier League. But in terms of supporters and keeping people happy it is massive, massive.

"Just like Celtic, they are massive clubs, all over the world.

"If he was invited to take the job, he would get much more money, he would get a massive pot to buy players from and he would have to think about it."
