Steven Gerrard to Manchester United claim leaves Rangers hero Ally McCoist reeling as he scoffs at fan's plea

Steven Gerrard at Manchester United? Listen, we know it's 2020 but there are some things in football that just don't happen.

Namely, a legendary Liverpool captain becoming manager of his team's fiercest and most bitter rivals.

However, as far as one United fan is concerned, it's exactly what the ailing Old Trafford club needs.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side slumped to a dismal 1-0 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday to raise more questions over his long-term future.

United had seemingly recovered from a 6-1 home thumping against Tottenham but they now sit 15th in the Premier League.

It's prompted one supporter to tell talkSPORT that Rangers boss Gerrard should be the man to replace Solskjaer - to the disbelief of Ally McCoist.

United fan Brett told Darren Bent's Boot Room on Sunday night: “I’d break the bank and go for Steven Gerrard to replace Ole.

“Listen, money talks. The guy has absolutely got an identity in how he wants to play.

“He can motivate players. It’s a no-brainer.”

The remarkable claim was played back to McCoist on Monday morning, and the Ibrox legend refused to entertain the prospect.

He said: "Leave him alone, the campaign to leave Steven alone starts here! It starts here now.

"Listen, he's not moving. I'm not prepared to discuss it."
