Rangers have admitted there has as yet been no contact from Aston Villa over Steven Gerrard.
Villa sacked Dean Smith last week after a stunted start to the Premier League season.
Record Sport revealed on Monday night Gerrard is one of their top targets with CEO Christian Purslow pushing for the former Liverpool star.
We told how Villa would not press ahead with a prime candidate in case they lost face – as Newcastle did with Unai Emery – and would instead back channel to gauge how receptive that option would be.
We also revealed it could take as long as Thursday morning before the Premier League club made their move.
And, as predicted, there has as yet been nothing concrete from either camp, with Gerrard himself tight-lipped on the rumours.
It is being reported by outlets such as Go Radio that Rangers say there has been "no contact" from Aston Villa at this stage.
It's believed Villa want their new manager in place for their clash with Brighton in two weeks' time.
That would mean Gerrard would have to head to the West Midlands for talks during the forthcoming international break if he is to take the job.
The likes of Roberto Martinez and Frank Lampard have also been linked with the role, but reports in England have stated a move for the Rangers boss could materialise in the coming days.
So far though Villa are keeping their powder dry, having not even asked to speak to Gerrard.
