Steven Gerrard tipped for Rangers exit as incoming Newcastle United owners reveal next manager plan

Steven Gerrard has emerged as the favourite to replace Steve Bruce as the odds continue to tumble on the Rangers boss.

The Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, chaired by multi-billionaire Mohammed Bin Salman, have completed a £300million deal for Newcastle United.

The Tyneside club now looks set for a major overhaul both on and off the park after the 14-year tenure of Mike Ashley.

And a host of bookies have made Gerrard the frontrunner with big money being taken to propel the Ibrox manager into the number one spot.

He started the day as a 20/1 outsider but ended it as joint 4/1 frontrunner with Antonio Conte with Paddy Power customers, while Gerrard is now second favourite behind ex-Celtic target Eddie Howe with Betfair.

And he has been backed in to 3/1 favourite with Sky Bet and Bet Victor.

Amanda Staveley has spoken out for the first time since the takeover was rubber-stamped, and insisted no decision has been taken by her Saudi-led consortium.

She told Sky Sports News: "We're obviously painfully aware of the relegation issue and we're going to do everything we can to make sure the club is not relegated.

"But all decisions about players and managers are for another day.

"We’re very supportive of Steve, and we’ve spoken to him. What we’re going to do is not talk about managers or what big signings we can make.

“We’re going to do a review right through the football operations, of the commercial side as well, and come back and make some decisions.”

It comes after Steve Bruce has broken his silence on his future at St James' Park.

Bruce told The Telegraph : “I want to continue, I’d like the chance to show the new owners what I can do, but you have to be realistic and they may well want a new manager to launch things for them.

“New owners normally want a new manager. I’ve been around long enough to understand that.

“That decision is not up to me. I accept that and I will accept what comes my way. I have to wait to have those conversations with people when the time is right.

“If I don’t make it to a 1,000 games against Spurs, you might say that could only happen to me, but I don’t think it would be cruel. It’s just football."
