Steven Gerrard tells Rangers players 'home truths' as long unbeaten streak ends

Steven Gerrard's 40-game unbeaten run as Rangers boss came to an end on Saturday with a 1-0 defeat away at Dundee United.

A second-half goal from Jamie Robson handed the former Liverpool skipper his first loss in the Scottish Premiership since March 2020 - with the Rangers boss keen to share some “home truths” with his players, ahead of their Champions League showdown with Malmo on Tuesday.

"From our point of view, it was not good enough. I think over the course of the 90 minutes we didn't deserve to lose the game but you always put yourself in that position if you don't score goals”, the former Liverpool skipper told Sky Sports.

“The result and the performance is on me and my team. We'll have to accept that and move on pretty quickly.”

Rangers won their opening game of the season against Livingston last weekend, but Gerrard has now suffered back-to-back losses after a 2-1 away defeat to Malmo in midweek.

"When you suffer a setback, it gives you the chance to reset and give some of the players some home truths. We'll go away and analyse the game. At the moment, we've not got time to feel sorry for ourselves [with the Malmo game on Tuesday].

"We're going to need a far better level of performance to get that done."

The Scottish champions meet the Swedish side in the penultimate qualifying round, with the Gers having not reached the Champions’ League group stages since the 2010/11 season.

“The boys have been absolutely top for me during [the unbeaten run] but the reality is we’ve lost two games on the spin”, he said.

“We have to take responsibility for that and we’ll put it right. We’ve got no time to sulk or feel sorry for ourselves.

“We’ve got a huge game coming up and it’s the perfect opportunity to bounce back, but the key is we’ve got to find a level of performance that’s a lot better than today.”
