Steven Gerrard snaps back at Emile Heskey over claims skin colour got him Rangers job

Steven Gerrard has snapped back at former Liverpool teammate Emile Heskey after comments on his managerial credentials.

Heskey suggested this week that it was easier for Gerrard and fellow managers to land a top job because of his skin colour.

Former England striker Heskey was critical of the decision to hand Gerrard and Frank Lampard top jobs, while BAME managers like Sol Campbell have had to start at the bottom of the Football League.

"I couldn't tell you why black people had to be bottom-feeders and then others can go wherever and get a job," Heskey said,

"I can point towards medals. Sol has got more than Stevie. Ashley Cole’s got more than any of them.

"They are going to get those jobs. I can only point towards skin colours.

"England’s best player for that era. Ash is being given a chance to get on that ladder with Chelsea Under-15s.”

But ahead of his side's Europa League clash with Feyenoord, Gerrard delivered a withering response to his former teammate.

“I don’t have anything to say on that. I don’t really look out for any interviews that Emile Heskey does," the Rangers boss said.

Gerrard and Heskey played together for club and country and were part of the Liverpool side that won the treble in 2001.

Heskey left Liverpool in 2004 before enjoying spells at Wigan, Birmingham, Aston Villa and Bolton.
