Steven Gerrard shares Cedric Itten's impressive Rangers impact as he bigs up Swiss striker

Steven Gerrard is confident Cedric Itten will have a huge impact at Rangers after watching him in training.

The Switzerland international made his Ibrox debut when he replaced Alfredo Morelos with 15 minutes to go in Sunday's 3-0 win over St Mirren.

It came after Morelos had grabbed two goals to put the game beyond doubt and any edge was taken right out of the game, meaning Itten didn't really have any chance of imposing himself.

But Gerrard is confident he will have a big say in the coming months after revealing he was hugely impressed by him in the first few training sessions he's had with Rangers.

He said: "Cedric came into the game when it was won. I think we were managing the game then, keeping the ball and not forcing the issue.

"But from what I've seen in the opening two or three training sessions, I think he's going to be a big player for us.

"He has to get used to the players and used to the style.

"But there are loads of appearances for him here if he works hard and earns them, he can be a big player for us."

St Mirren defended staunchly for much of the game with Jak Alnwick making some great saves from the likes of Morelos and James Tavernier.

As well as Morelos' double, the opener came from an own goal when Conor McCarthy turned the Colombian's cross into his own net.

And Jim Goodwin admits that it was proof that visiting Ibrox - and eventually Celtic Park - isn't any easier without fans in the stadium.

He said: "It is definitely not easier (coming to Ibrox with no fans). I hated coming here as a player - and I don't just mean here, Ibrox and Parkhead.

"Coming to the Old Firm is really difficult. They are long afternoons, you know you won't have a great deal of possession and you know that when you get those one or two chances you have to be clinical. We did not do any of that today unfortunately.

"The goals are poor albeit Rangers thoroughly deserved their victory."
