Steven Gerrard set for Rangers talks as appointment timeline laid out

Steven Gerrard is set to hold talks with Rangers over the next 48 hours, it is claimed.

Gers chiefs are believed to be getting closer to landing on their new man, with an understanding the process could be complete by the end of the week.

The former boss is one name firmly in the frame as a sensational return to Ibrox could be in the offing. He is up against others such as Davide Ancelotti and Russell Martin, although some reports suggested Gerrard and Martin were the final two.

We told yesterday how Gerrard had pulled out of a charity match with former Liverpool teammate Djibril Cisse due to "professional reasons", to sent tongues wagging. And later that same day betting was suspended on the 44-year-old heading back to Glasgow.

Now, the Daily Mail is reporting the former England midfielder is to hold talks with club chiefs over the next two days.

Betting suspended on Steven Gerrard to Rangers return

It's claimed Gerrard has 'considerable' support among board members and is now the frontrunner ahead of Martin.

Rangers reportedly want to make an appointment by the end of the week and will aim to do so once those discussions have been conducted.

The report adds Gerrard won't face any tax complications relating to his stint in Saudi Arabia, which was cited as a problem when he was being linked after Philippe Clement's sacking in February.

Announcing his mate's withdrawal from his event yesterday, Cisse wrote: "Unfortunately, for professional reasons,Steven Gerrard just advised me that he won't be able to grace his presence for my anniversary next Tuesday, May 27th.

"My disappointment is great but my respect for my captain goes above all.

"What we lived together in Istanbul 20 years ago will go above and beyond. Big respect captain."

Some Gers fans were taking it as a sign of things to come with one replying: "Welcome home to Rangers Stevie boy."
