Steven Gerrard sends message after Rangers train at Liverpool ahead of Tranmere friendly match

Steven Gerrard was back in familiar surroundings today as Liverpool allowed Rangers to use their training facilities ahead of their pre-season friendly tomorrow.

The Scottish Premiership champions are on Merseyside as they gear up to face Tranmere Rovers tomorrow afternoon.

Rangers, who are continuing preparations ahead of their title defence bid, benefitted from Gerrard’s Liverpool connection as they made the most of the £50million AXA Training Centre in Kirkby.

Gerrard’s men kicked off their pre-season campaign with a 1-0 victory over Partick Thistle.

New Rangers signing John Lundstram – who grew up as a Liverpool fan – was in attendance, as was former Red Ryan Kent, who had triggered worry amongst the Gers fanbase after he was absent from early pre-season photographs when the club’s first-team returned to training.

Luckily, for Rangers fans, the former Liverpool man was nursing an injury, as was confirmed on Heart & Hand earlier this week.

Following their tie against Micky Mellon’s Tranmere side, The Light Blues face Premier League opposition Arsenal in Glasgow, before taking on Blackpool, Brighton and Real Madrid, with their title defence beginning at home to Livingston.

While Gerrard’s visit to the AXA Training Centre might be his first, he is certainly no stranger to Liverpool’s training pitches.

The former captain enjoyed a special Anfield playing career before returning to the club as an academy coach – remaining in his position until he made the move to Scotland in 2018 to take over the managerial reigns at Rangers.

After a scintillating 2020/21 campaign, the Rangers boss will once again be under pressure to deliver silverware to the Ibrox faithful.
