Steven Gerrard sends Liverpool message after Champions League heartbreak

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has expressed sympathy for Liverpool after their Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid and said they didn’t do ‘too much wrong’.

Jurgen Klopp’s side went down 1-0 at the Stade de France in Paris after a Vinicius Junior second half goal. The Reds dominated large spells of the game but couldn’t find a way past a man of the match performance from Thibaut Courtois.

Liverpool had 23 attempts with nine on target while Madrid only mustered four shots on goal and Gerrard doesn’t believe the Reds could have done much more.

“It’s a head scratcher,” he told BT Sport after the game. “I don’t think Liverpool did too much wrong. Okay they weren’t clinical and ruthless to take those chances - but a keeper just got Man of the Match against them in a final. Real put a defensive masterclass.

"Their defence across the pitch was magnificent. Over the 90 minutes they were blocking, defending one v one and positionally they defend ever so well.”

Despite the heartbreak, Gerrard believes Klopp’s side are more than capable of going again next year. He said: “Make no mistake, they will bounce back. You have those experiences to learn from. This game is either the best night of your life or one of the worst. They will dust themselves down and go for it all again next year.”
