Steven Gerrard says Rangers didn't play to maximum in Celtic win as he points to 'biggest challenge'

Steven Gerrard says Rangers didn't play to their maximum despite a comfortable victory over Celtic at Parkhead.

The Ibrox side ran out 2-0 winners thanks to a Connor Goldson double.

Rangers restricted Neil Lennon's side to few chances, and never looked in any real danger throughout the 90-minutes.

Gerrard was pleased with the maturity his team showed but believes they can do even better.

He told Sky Sports: "They threw everything at us, but that's where I'm most pleased with my team. We controlled everything they threw at us.

"We managed the game really well and could have maybe scored more. Ryan Kent's volley there at the end, he's through and Ajer makes a fantastic tackle. So we're really pleased with the result and performance we've given.

"But we haven't been at our best, or our maximum, but we didn't have to be because it was a really controlled, professional performance."

The Rangers boss says it's important his players don't get carried away, and continue to work hard as they look to stamp their authority on the title race.

He said: "I've just said to the players to enjoy their win. They deserve to enjoy their night tonight, but there will be no getting carried away. We need to remain humble, and on we go.

"It is different. Last time [they won at Celtic Park] we had a break and maybe that's ruined our rhythm and fluidity.

"But we've got a massive game on Thursday [v Standard] and we need to get them recovered and ready for that."

Gerrard added: "We've still got an awful lot of hard work to do. We've got respect for the team that we're chasing, but it was a really mature, experienced performance.

"We need more of that between now until the end of the season, and that's going to be our biggest challenge, can we go the distance."
