Steven Gerrard salutes his Rangers stars for thriving in 'Champions League' group

Delighted Steven Gerrard has paid tribute to his Rangers achievers after they secured their place in the last 32 of the Europa League.

The Ibrox side secured second spot behind Porto after a 1-1 draw with Young Boys and will go into the draw for the knockouts on Monday.

Alfredo Morelos recovered in style from his Betfred Cup nightmare against Celtic to fire home the opener during a dominant first half.

But the home fans were forced to sweat in the closing stages after Borna Barisic's own goal ramped up the tension.

Gerrard, though, had nothing but praise for his Rangers heroes who battled to earn a richly-deserved result.

He told BT Sport: "We just need to take each game as it comes and we'll give it everything we've got.

"We'll see what the draw brings but I remember sitting in the canteen for the (group stage) draw with all the players when I saw Porto, I thought 'ooh tough', when I saw Feyenoord I thought 'very tough', then Young Boys and I thought that's a Champions League group.

"They've all got Champions League experience and we haven't. We're searching for that, we're striving for that so this is an incredible achievement when you think where we were in the middle of July qualifying in Gibraltar.

"Qualifying out that group, whatever way you do it, is fantastic."

And Gerrard believes his side's defiant Europa League showing will quieten critics in the wake of the Cup Final heartache against Celtic .

He added: "What it means is these players have character and guts.

"I know what it's like to lose a Final, you feel flat, you take days to recover from it.

"To recover well enough and get out the group is a superb effort from the lads."
