Steven Gerrard's verdict on Bongani Zungu Rangers debut and why Kemar Roofe was playing 'angry'

Steven Gerrard has given his verdict on Bongani Zungu's Rangers debut after the South African international played 45-minutes of the 8-0 victory against Hamilton Accies.

Zungu came on at half-time to replace Ryan Jack with the score already at 4-0, and Gerrard was pleased with what he saw from the midfielder.

Rangers ran out convincing winners thanks to doubles from James Tavernier, Joe Aribo and Kemar Roofe, along with a Brandon Barker strike.

Assessing Zungu's first appearance, Gerrard told Rangers TV: "We were comfortable when he came into the game, but it was about the second half performance. I demanded top standards at half time, all the way through, and I wanted more goals.

"Bongani came on there. Kept us balanced behind the ball, kept us ticking over and he showed his range of passing, his aggression, and his profile.

"He's only going to get better and better with time."

The Rangers boss also spoke about how much he enjoyed Kemar Roofe's performance, with the frontman playing "angry".

Gerrard added: "We've got people getting back up to speed.

"Kemar Roofe played angry probably because he never got on the pitch through the week, which I love to see.

"Roofe is getting close to being at his best, Joe Aribo is getting close to being at his best. I've got some selection dilemmas in the future but that's what I want."
