Steven Gerrard's three-year Rangers rollercoaster from Cup lows to classic ref rants and historic 55

Steven Gerrard revealed how Jurgen Klopp's key piece of sound advice was to remain balanced as a boss and it was crucial during a three-year Rangers roller coaster.

As the title-winning Light Blues gaffer reflected on his time in charge on the third anniversary of his appointment, he said: "It’s an absolute pleasure and honour to do it.

"It’s been been a journey, some incredibles lows as well. The journey takes you all over the place. I can't believe it's been three years - we go again."

Rangers fans will be hoping for more of the same as they strap themselves in and here Record Sport Online takes a look at some of those highs and lows of his tenure so far.

Let's Go - May 4, 2018

The gates were opened at Ibrox as thousands of fans were allowed into the stadium to greet their new manager. Earlier, the Liverpool legend and former England captain set the tone for his Rangers revolution with two simple words - LET’S GO!

Shades of Souey - August 5, 2018

Plenty of comparisons were made with Graeme Souness when Steven Gerrard was appointed Rangers boss given the pair shared legendary status at Liverpool and took on Ibrox as their first managerial gigs.

And Gerrard channelled his inner Souness - who famously said ‘no one likes us, we don’t care’ in a TV interview -with a referee rant after just his first domestic game in charge.

He was unhappy with an Alfredo Morelos red card just 12 minutes into the 1-1 draw and said: “It seems like the world is against us. I believe it’s been happening for seasons.”

Rangers suffered their most humiliating result in Europe at the start of the season prior to Steven Gerrard’s arrival when they lost to minnows Progres Niederkorn from Luxembourg which flop boss Pedro Caixinha never recovered from.

But it was in continental competition that Gerrard’s career really took flight as he negotiated his way through four qualifying rounds to reach the Europa League group stage with a dramatic match in Russia sealing it as his nine men battled to a 1-1 draw.

Gerrard knew the importance of that stage and said: “This club doesn’t function how we want it to without European funds.”

Hampden heartache, part I - October 28, 2018

The signs of progress under Steven Gerrard were evident in the early days but a Betfred Cup semi-final loss - a fifth consecutive last four defat for the club - was a reminder of the work still to be done to ensure a return to the glory days.

Lewis Ferguson’s late header earned Aberdeen victory and exposed Gers shortcomings and Gerrard had a warning afterwards, saying: “If these players don’t step up, it’s simple at a big club: the manager goes and finds better quality.”

Rangers ended a run of a dozen derby games without victory as Steven Gerrard inflicted his old Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers first Old Firm defeat.

Ryan Jack was the hero with the only goal of the game at Ibrox in the festive clash with wild post-match celebrations.

Don in again - March 12, 2019

Silverware hopes were all but ended for Steven Gerrard’s first season in charge as Aberdeen again eliminated them, this time in the Scottish Cup with a a 2-0 win at Ibrox in the replay after the teams battled out a 1-1 draw at Pittodrie in the quarter final.

After breaking through the semi-final barrier to reach his first final as a manager, it was a familiar ending at Hampden as Rangers lost to rivals Celtic.

The Light Blues were the dominant side but Fraser Forster was outstanding between the sticks for the Hoops as Alfredo Morelos missed from the spot after Celtic were reduced to 10 men and scored through Christopher Jullien with TV replays showing he was in an offside position. Gers coach Michael Beale laster described it as “the most one-sided final maybe in history that a team loses”.

Steven Gerrard couldn’t hide his emotions as he erupted at full-time and screamed into the Sky Sports cameras in wild celebrations after leading Rangers to his biggest win - and the club’s first at Parkhead for almost a decade.

He was criticised in some quarters with suggestions it was over the top and Record Sport columnist Chris Sutton claiming it was “embarrassing” but the Gers boss said: “We're 18 months into this so we have to enjoy that, it's what football's all about.”

So much to Braga about - February 26, 2020

Having qualified from the Europa League group stage, Rangers then got through their first knockout round with a stunning win over Braga in Portugal thanks to Ryan Kent’s winner after an incredible comeback win at Ibrox in the first leg when they recovered from going two goals down.

From a Euro high to the his lowest point just days later as Steven Gerrard was left considering his future following a Scottish Cup exit at the hands of Hearts which left them trophyless for a second successive season. “Two seasons without a trophy isn’t good enough. It’s not what I’m about,” he said. “I need to think now.” But it got worse a few days later as they lost at home to Hamilton Accies in the final league game before football shut down due to Covid.

Record breakers on return

The season being halted due to the pandemic allowed Gerrard and his players time to do some soul searching and build for a huge season and they hit the ground running as a result, breaking a 114-year-old defensive record after keeping clean sheets in their first seven league games and a 2-0 win at Parkhead laid the foundations for a title push.

Reminder of old failings - December 16, 2020

Rangers didn’t lose a match domestically or in Europe until they crashed out of the Betfred Cup at St Mirren and the cup shocker. That led to questions over their bottle crashing but they didn’t lose again domestically until the Scottish Cup penalty shoot-out defeat to St Johnstone in the quarter final to make it one knockout cup success in nine during Gerrard’s three years.

Hot night as history beckons - March 3, 2021

Steven Gerrard was involved in an astonishing bust-up with referee John Beaton as he launched an f-bomb tirade at the whistler for denying his side a penalty and booking Alfredo Morelos for diving against Livingston. Gerrard was subsequently handed a touchline ban but the win in west Lothian put Gers on the brink of title glory.

Legend in Liverpool, God in Glasgow - March 2020

Rangers were crowned champions at the earliest stage in Scottish football for 119 years after Celtic were held to a goalless draw at Tannadice.

That continued the celebrations which had started 24 hours earlier when Rangers beat St Mirren at Ibrox and Gerrard was at the heart of incredible dressing room scenes, sliding across the floor.
