Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has urged clubs in the EFL not to follow in the footsteps of their Scottish counterparts if they are forced into ending their season early.
The second, third and fourth tiers have all ended in Scotland after Dundee backed the league's resolution following a change of heart.
The passing of the motion also means the SPFL board has the power to "call" the Premiership season when it becomes clear it cannot continue due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Such a move in England has the potential to scupper Leeds United's bid for promotion.
The whole situation has been branded an "absolute mess" by Gerrard, who believes if clubs in England are forced to take the same action, then they should look to use the model Rangers initially put forward.
“Possibly. I don’t think anyone has any problems on how the SPFL about it in terms of the vote,” he told Sky Sports.
“It’s because everyone feels that they have been backed into a corner to give that vote, basically they are saying that no money can be given out until you give that vote.
“If you are a team in the middle of the league and are safe from relegation but not involved in promotion/play-offs or to win anything you are bound to vote yes as you want your money straight away.
“That’s not really a fair vote and that’s the reason why they have managed to get 81 per cent of the vote.
“If they do end up doing it in England the resolution that Rangers suggested, with a few clubs backing it, was can’t they give a certain amount of money out so all the worries about financial situations are taking out of the equation?
"Then you can give a fair vote across the board.”
With Leeds top of the Championship and potentially just nine games away from promotion, they may well be pleased to hear an influential figure such as Gerrard claiming that the only way clubs can vote is if other factors are taken off the table.
