Steven Gerrard's Standard Liege verdict and why Rangers will need to be at their 'best level'

Steven Gerrard believes Rangers will need to be at their "best level" against Standard Liege in the Europa League tonight.

The Ibrox boss is impressed with what he's seen from the Belgian side, and knows his players will need to bring their A-game to get the three points in their group stage opener at the Stade Maurice Dufrasne.

Standard will be without three players – Michel-Ange Balikwisha, Nicolas Raskin and full back Moussa Sissako – after their squad was hit with several positive COVID-19 tests.

However Gerrard says his focus has to be on his own side, and says their game plan won't change one bit.

He said: "We come here with our own game plan and we're focused on what we're trying to do. We'll try to hit a level close to our best because that's how we're going to have to go about it.

"We're coming up against a very good team. A big squad full of talented players. I'm sure they'll cope [without those who are missing]. Obviously it's not ideal for them but we're here to do a job. We're here to try and take maximum points.

"Maybe the team we thought would start might change in a couple of areas so we have to be ready to adapt to certain situations, but we're focused on what we want to do."

Rangers have put in a host of impressive European performances in Gerrard's time at the club.

They excelled against the likes of Porto, Feyenoord, Legia Warsaw and S.C. Braga in last season's campaign, while overcoming Turkish giants Galatasaray in the play-offs this year.

Gerrard says the credit has to go to his players, who continually deliver on the European stage.

He added: "This is a level that will certainly find you out. It's a level where you can't carry individual players in or out of possession.

"I think the players through the last couple of years know that. Only our best level will get us where we want to get to.

"I have to pay credit to the players. The majority of the times we've given them a task or a plan, through the qualifiers or over the couple of years, and when we're faced with a stiff challenge the players have more often than not delivered."

Gerrard admits he's spent a lot of time watching Standard since the final whistle went at Parkhead on Saturday afternoon.

And he knows how big a threat they will pose his side.

He said: "I think it would be a real big victory, but the players are going to have to work ever so hard to get that victory. Standard Liege are a good team with a good coach.

"They have a real aggressive way, the way the come and press. They've got a strong pedigree over the years in Europe. A good home record.

"Certainly over the last ten games they are in good form. We're under no illusions. This is going to be really tough, but we come here in a good place.

"We accept the challenge. We're looking forward to it, and it's going to be a fascinating game."
