Steven Gerrard's Ryan Jack call shows Rangers boss and ex England star is rooting firmly for Scotland

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard may have represented England more than 100 times over a 14-year period – captaining them at major finals.

However that won't stop him rooting for Scotland when they take to the field against Serbia in this week's massive Euro 2020 play-off final.

In fact, the Ibrox boss is even doing his bit to help ensure one of Steve Clarke's key midfield men is in top shape come Thursday evening.

Gerrard says he substituted Ryan Jack at half-time of Rangers' emphatic 8-0 win over Hamilton Accies out of respect to the upcoming match.

He also gave Steven Davis a break, despite the midfielder being fully fit, with Northern Ireland facing a play-off final of their own against Slovakia.

Rangers were comfortable winners, and the match was effectively won by half-time, so the Ibrox boss had the luxury of giving his players some extra recovery time.

Gerrard told Rangers TV: "We've got everyone fit at the moment which is important. They are off on internationals right now and we wish them good luck, but we need them to stay healthy.

"We've tried to respect the international games through the week. Today, leaving Steven Davis out, he's fully fit. Obviously taking [Ryan] Jack off at half time, we're trying to show respect there."

Gerrard previously told how he'd be incredibly proud of his Scottish players should they be part of the squad to qualify for the first major finals in more than two decades.

Jack and Jon McLaughlin are involved in Clarke's Scotland squad for the upcoming matches, and the Rangers boss said: "Of course I want Scotland to qualify because I have players who are going away with them.

“They are my players and I am proud to see them play. It would be huge if they made it.

"I think everyone representing Scotland and the clubs domestically are working ever so hard to make Scotland’s name respectable and proud and to get it back where it should be.

“On Thursday night, it would be another huge step towards that so I wish the lads well.”

He added: "It is a fantastic experience and I am sure all the Scottish players, as young boys, dreamed of representing their country and also doing that in a major competition.

“They are close, they have got one more step to go. They have got to go there on Thursday and leave everything on the pitch and do the Scottish supporters proud. If they do then I am sure they can get the job done.”
