Steven Gerrard’s Rangers press conference in full as boss reveals Scott Arfield has sent a 'crystal clear message'

Beaming Steven Gerrard has told his Rangers fringe stars to use Scott Arfield as inspiration in their bid to become an Ibrox regular.

The 31-year-old Canada international was on the outside looking in at the start of the season but has been in impressive form since return to the starting XI.

Arfield could be set for a key role against Galatasaray on Thursday with both Ryan Jack and Joe Aribo still sidelined ahead of the visit from the Turkish big-hitters.

And Gerrard reckons any player who reckons they should be a Rangers regular should pay close attention on how the former Burnley man turned his fortunes around.

Speaking at his pre-match briefing, he said: "At the beginning of the season he wasn't a starter but at no given moment did he drop his standards.

"He trained harder, he trained better and his opportunity came and he's arguably been our most consistent player over the last run of games.

"Really pleased about how Scott has gone about his business.

"He's sent a clear message to anyone else who is on the fringe or not getting much game time at the moment.

"A lot of players speak in the press, Scott's done his talking on the training pitch and the pitch which is fantastic for me."

The Super Lig leaders have travelled to Glasgow without former Barcelona and Atletico Madrid star Arda Turan but, with the likes of Radamel Falcao and his old Liverpool team-mate Ryan Babel in the Galatasaray ranks, the Ibrox chief is well aware of the quality his side will face.

He added: "We here at Rangers have big respect for Galatasaray as a team, for all their individuals because they play at a real big level," said Gerrard, who could welcome back Ryan Jack and Brandon Barker, but has a doubt over Cedric Itten after the striker picked up a knee injury in training.

"They have big experience in this type of competition.

"I think the main strength to Galatasaray's team is the spine. The two centre-backs (Christian Luyindama and Marcao) are big, strong, powerful and quick and that filters right through to Radamel Falcao.

"So we have big respect for the team (on Thursday). We have no fear but we have huge respect."
