Steven Gerrard's Rangers press conference in full as boss bites his tongue over fan return query

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard refused to be drawn into a debate over the return of fans to football grounds in Scotland.

Up to 4,000 fans are set to return to grounds in England from next month, and many north of the border are desperate to see a similar plan outlined by Holyrood.

But when asked if he had a message to send to the Scottish government, Rangers boss Gerrard delivered a measured response.

"I haven't got a message. I leave the authorities to do what they do," he replied. "They're the people who make the big decisions. We just follow the rules and the guidelines.

I certainly welcome the news down in England about getting the supporters back, it's a big step and it's nice and positive that we can see some movement down there.

"The players are craving the fans back and I'm no different. Hopefully, when it's safe to do so, we can start building the numbers up and get back to normality.

"But I'm not in a position to give messages out to the government or the people who make the big decisions."

Gerrard was speaking ahead of Thursday's all-important clash with Benfica, where a win could send them into the knockout stages of the Europa League with two games to spare.

He revealed that it remains touch and go over key midfielder Ryan Jack, and that it comes too soon for Amiens loanee Bongani Zungu.

"Ryan Jack's a doubt for tomorrow's game. We won't know on Ryan until later on today whether he's available or not.

"Zungu is missing as well, we hope to have him back in a week to ten days' time.

"The rest is as it was from the weekend basically."

"I think the main focus is always on our preparations.

"We obviously have to pay attention to what's happening elsewhere because we need to know possible teams and who we could be facing from a personnel point of view.

"But the focus is very much on my team and preparing in the best possible way. "
