Steven Gerrard's Rangers outburst was provoked by incompetence and John Beaton shouldn't referee again - Hotline

There might have been controversy after Alfredo Morelos was tripped but there was no stumble for Rangers at Livingston in the march towards the title.

Steven Gerrard blew a gasket after John Beaton booked his striker for diving when it looked like a penalty but it won’t put a downer on the Light Blues' party.

John Bruce, Glasgow, said: “Being denied a stone-wall penalty and having the manager be handed Rangers’ first red card of the season in a petulant outburst by the referee won’t take the shine off the team’s 1-0 victory.

“They’re within touching distance and the celebrations of the Rangers players at the end showed that they have finally accepted that the trophy will be theirs – probably at Parkhead.”

Gordon Hendry, Ochiltree, said: “As a Rangers fan I’m delighted with our performance against Livingston who tried their best to bring the game down to their level as well as their dreadful plastic pitch. Even Beaton’s helping hand in denying us a stonewall penalty and sending Gerrard to the stand couldn’t prevent our team's quality and character from shining through – the mark of true champions.”

There was fair bit of Beaton bashing though.

Alan McGaw, Alloa, said: “Another hard-fought game against a stuffy Livingston but it’s another step closer to the title only spoilt by an incompetent ref regarding the stonewall penalty. Man of the match Morelos should have the card rescinded, will the compliance officer look into this? We wait with bated breath.”

Stuart McLeod emailed: “Beaton couldn’t get his card out of his pocket quickly enough as Morelos went down in the Livingston box. He can be forgiven for missing the jersey tug in the second half but how the linesman missed that is incredible. No wonder Morelos is looking to get out the Scottish game.”

Alan Milligan emailed: “This guy should surely never referee at the top level again. He missed two blatant penalties and was card happy throughout the match. Unless the SPFL introduces VAR our referees will continue to be a laughing stock.”

George Wilson, West Sussex, said: “It’s been a total disgrace the way Morelos has been treated in Scotland by referees, the SFA and the SPFL, the media, other players like Scott Brown deliberately provoking him.

“Its noticeable how well Morelos plays in Europe as he doesn’t have the diabolical refereeing to put up with nor the hammer throwers trying to kick him off the park.”

Scott Gowers, Edinburgh, said: “The official has constantly lost the plot in not awarding stonewall penalties or showing a card where Morelos is concerned and the man should never be allowed to officiate again, even Gerrard lost the plot at half time as a result of the official's obvious incompetence to do his job.”

But Frank O’Donnell, Ralston, said: “Not so long ago Gerrard said the ref got a clear view of the Roofe incident and no action was taken, so he was happy with that.

“Now a decision has gone against him with the ref having a clear view also. Stop your greeting, Steven.”

Gers fans felt Livi were bit shirty at the Spaghettihad as well.

Dr Robert S. Pender emailed: “Rangers need to throw away their jerseys and play in their skins. It’s the only way to stop Livingston players fouling by pulling the opposite shirts.”

Alfie Mullin, London, said: “The Livingston players looked like they wanted to be Rangers players. Or at least have a Rangers jersey, given the way they kept pulling at them.”
