Steven Gerrard's Rangers icon status predicted as Ally McCoist roars 'never mind Liverpool'

Rangers goal hero Ally McCoist reckons Steven Gerrard is doing such a top job that he'll soon enter the 'legendary' category of Ibrox managers.

The boss has his club on the precipice of the Scottish Premiership title with a 23-point advantage and eight more wins from 12 will guarantee the trophy.

And although Gerrard made his name at Anfield as a player, McCoist bellowed "never mind Liverpool".

He insisted delivering a first league flag in a decade would mean just as much to fans in Govan as any of his playing accomplishments did in Merseyside.

McCoist, speaking to QPR striker Charlie Austin and ITV Racing's Oli Bell with Oddschecker’s Studs Up podcast, said: “Brilliant. He has done and is doing a fantastic job.

“This is his third year now, and I said that Rangers had been fine up until now, but he has to win something to prove that they’re back.

“The level of performance this season domestically and in Europe, I can’t believe it. The European section with Benfica in it, and to win the group was no mean achievement. "

But it’s Rangers’ domestic form that’s sending both McCoist and Rangers fans delirious: “Their overall play, he’s (Gerrard) clearly got a very good background staff, Gary McAllister, Michael Beale – they’re a team leading a team.

“Steven deserves enormous credit and if they can get the boys over the line, which you’ve got to say, looks very achievable now.

“I can’t tell you how many people it’ll mean so much to, because it’s been a long time and the club’s been through a torturous period with administration and liquidation.

“If Steven manages to hold on to this title – never mind Liverpool – he’ll be an absolute legend up here at Rangers.”
