Steven Gerrard’s Rangers face big name dugout test as Antwerp place two legends on boss shortlist

Rangers’ Euro foes Royal Antwerp are weighing up a move for either former Belgium boss Marc Wilmots or ex-Bayern Munich and Barcelona star Mark van Bommel as they kick off their manager hunt.

The Belgian side were rocked on Tuesday when Ivan Leko’s exit was confirmed. Leko has left for Chinese Super League outfit Shanghai SIPG in a highly-lucrative deal.

Now Antwerp, who have a Europa League last-32 showdown with Rangers coming up in seven weeks, must find his successor.

And they have placed two big names – Wilmots and van Bommel – on their shortlist to be their new head coach.

Wilmots was Belgium boss for four years and guided them to the World Cup quarter-finals in Brazil in 2014 before being sacked after a poor Euro 2016 campaign.

He took charge of Ivory Coast, but was axed after failing to qualify for the World Cup and lasted just seven months as Iran boss before being fired last year.

Dutch coach van Bommel is without a job after getting fired by PSV Eindhoven after 18 months in charge of the club. He was also assistant manager to Bert van Marwijk at Australia at the 2018 World Cup.

Rangers reached the last 32 after topping their group.
