Steven Gerrard's Liverpool dream and how he is learning from Jurgen Klopp

Steven Gerrard has reiterated that it is his “dream” to manage Liverpool in the future.

The former Liverpool captain and current Rangers manager has made no secret of his desire to become manager of the Reds one day, but will only take the job when he is ready.

He said: “I’m mature enough to know that I have to be ready for the Liverpool job. I’m not daft enough to think I‘m going to get it just because I was a good player for Liverpool Football Club. I have to go and prove that I can do it, first and foremost at Rangers.”

He knows that should his former employer come knocking, it would be hard to say no, but for the moment he’s happy where he is.

“If I got offered it, it’s a completely different ball game because you’re getting offered the Liverpool job. But sitting here right now where I am and what I’m doing, I’m fine, I’m calm, I’m happy.”

“There’s a realization if it’s going to happen, it will happen. The job offer will come at some point. For me it’s like, crack on and do what you’re doing. Try and become the good as you can, if and when ever comes.”

His motivations for returning to his boyhood club aren’t entirely from the heart, however. His ambition to stay at the top remains the drive behind his career path.

He said: “I don’t see my managing until I’m 60/70 years old. I want to experience managing at the top. If that happens in two years, great, if it happens in four. But I’ll keep working towards trying to coach at the top.”

Gerrard has been learning from current Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp , and claims the German has been happy to answer any questions.

“If I’m in his office. Straight away he’s an open book and he’ll give you whatever you need. He’s not one of those people. He’s that thick skinned and that confident and he backs himself so much.”

After recently signing extensions, both Gerrard and Klopp’s contracts are due to run out at the same time, in June 2024, sparking rumors of the former being next in line. However, Gerrard is sure that Klopp is in full control of his situation.

He said: “I think Jurgen will know in his head when he’s going to go now.”
