Steven Gerrard reveals what he told Alfredo Morelos ahead of Rangers return to form

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has opened up on the Alfredo Morelos pep talk that led to a rejuvenated display in the 3-0 win over St Mirren this afternoon.

The striker opened his league account for the season with two well-taken second half goals against at Ibrox.

While much has been made about the Colombian's apparent desire to leave for Ligue 1 side Lille in a multi-million pound move, he showed plenty of application and desire in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday afternoon.

It was a performance that justified the Scouser's decision to select the striker despite the double signings of Cedric Itten and Kemar Roofe earlier in the week.

And Gerrard admitted he had pulled the striker in for a chat over his lackluster display against Leverkusen on Thursday night and demanded more from his star man.

He told Rangers TV : "I wanted a bit more from him in midweek. We spoke about that. But he's certainly responded today.

"I think his two performances domestically have been fine.

"I thought he was decent at Aberdeen – could have been better in taking his chances and getting his shots off.

"Today I thought his all-round performance was good.

"More often than not, if you've got his talent, and you play well the numbers will come.

"They came today and I'm pleased with his all-round contribution."

Rangers performed well throughout the 90 minutes and were unlucky not to see a bigger margin of victory that better reflected their obvious superiority.

And Gerrard pinpointed the first half as the time to rack up a bigger score to ensure a more sedate finish to the game.

He told Radio Clyde: "I would have liked that second goal a bit earlier so we can relax a bit more but I've got to give the players lots and lots of credit because we pushed from the first whistle to try and find a breakthrough.

"We got one in the first half but I would have liked two.

"In the second half we stayed with it and went and finished the game off really well."
