Steven Gerrard reveals two things Rangers players are motivated by as he lifts the lid on Ibrox tactical briefings

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard admits only two things motivate footballers - days off and money.

The Liverpool legend has played at the highest levels of game, lifting the Champions League and winning 114 caps for England.

Winning the biggest trophies in the game may be a motivation for players, but the Rangers boss believes two factors come before all others.

Gerrard told the Daily Mail: "One thing will never change, players are still motivated by money and days off.

"We had one bad training session after the players had gone on a break, I threatened to restrict days off unless they bucked up. The next session was the best we've ever had. It was like watching Brazil."

The former midfielder was interviewed by ex team-mate Danny Murphy, who asked how Gerrard handled tactical briefings given he used to fall asleep listening to Rafa Benitez and Gerard Houllier.

"Let me put you right there, our meetings at Liverpool could last 40 minutes. My meetings are eight to 12 minutes."

And Murphy admitted that his lack of attention didn't affect the Liverpool captain on the pitch.

Gerrard agreed: "That's the key. If someone nods off in one of my team meetings and gets the winner against Celtic, I'll get him a pillow!"
