Steven Gerrard reveals the Kemar Roofe Rangers quick reaction that could save him an injury headache

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has offered assurances over Kemar Roofe 's injury, indicating the striker's quick thinking may have prevented a lengthy lay-off.

The summer signing limped off in the first half of the 5-0 Europa League win over Lincoln Red Imps with a calf problem, the same issue that curtailed his season at Anderlecht.

But the Rangers man could be back in action sooner rather than later, having ensured he did nothing to aggravate the injury.

Gerrard said: "We’re hoping it’s not an injury but it’s his calf. We’re hoping he caught it early enough so it won’t develop into a problem for us.

“We’ll give him 24 hours and see how he is.”

Fellow striker Alfredo Morelos came off the bench in the second half to bag a brace, and the Colombian is now just one goal behind Ally McCoist's European record.

Gerrard challenged El Bufalo to beat the legendary Ger's tally - but warned he'll only be on the same level if he stays long-term.

He said: "It’s superb for him. I’m sure he’s aware of that and has it in his sights. They’re two terrific scorers but I don’t think we can yet discuss Alfredo in the same breath as Ally because one won trophies here, one made this team champions and winners.

“Alfredo has yet to do that. It’s an incentive and a good title to get but for me he’s not ready to be discussed in the same breath as Ally just yet. He could be if he is around long enough.”

Gers fans made the trip despite the game being played behind closed doors and found various vantage points to watch.

They were also chanting outside Rangers’ hotel and Gerrard said: “It was lovely to hear. We’ve missed that.”
