Steven Gerrard reveals role Rangers youngster Zak Rudden could play next season

Zak Rudden has had a very successful loan spell away from Rangers.

He made a first team appearance in a pre-season friendly last summer and grabbed a goal against Bury in a 6-0 win.

Rudden then joined Falkirk and has scored 11 goals in 25 games in a struggling Bairns side.

And now he's set for a promotion to the Rangers first team when he returns to Ibrox at the end of the season.

Rangers have been reliant on Alfredo Morelos this campaign with Kyle Lafferty and Jermain Defoe failing to hit the heights expected of them.

Ryan Hardie also signed a new deal in January and could be given an opportunity but Steven Gerrard has revealed Rudden will be handed the chance to shine on pre-season.

The 19-year-old hitman scored four goals in three games for Scotland U19s during the international break and Gerrard is expecting big things from him.

He revealed the big striker will be given an opportunity in the first team next season if he continued to perform the way he is.

Rudden was one of a number of Rangers youngsters involved in the Scotland U19 squad with Stephen Kelly, Dapo Mebude, Glenn Middleton, Jordan Houston and Matthew Shiels also also involved. Ross McCrorie captained the U21s and brother Robby and goalkeeper Kieran Wright were also in the squad.

Gerrard told RangersTV: "It is brilliant, and we have a number of young lads who are doing extremely well. Zak is one who I have a lot of admiration for and is someone who was very keen to go out and play and be involved in a man’s game.

“He could have stayed here and been quite comfortable, but he has gone out to test himself and has done extremely well. He is someone who is very selfless and works his socks off.

“I see a future here for Zak. He will come with us on pre-season and depending on how he does, how he looks and how much he has improved over the 12 months will determine what part he plays next year.

“In the last couple of weeks he has done well, but it is no surprise as he gives you everything he has got.”
