Steven Gerrard reveals Rangers injury blow as he singles out star who is 'raising the bar' for club

Steven Gerrard has paid tribute to the Rangers fitness and sports science team as his side 'hit top numbers' following their Europa League triumph.

The Light Blues secured a 3-2 win over Standard Liege as they qualified for the knockout stage.

And the Ibrox boss insists his side's fitness levels are a huge reason why Rangers have been successful in navigating this busy period of the season so far.

Gerrard also singled out Kemar Roofe for 'raising the bar' with his current physical levels.

He said: "I have to pay credit to the fitness and sports science team, we are hitting top numbers. Everyone is hitting impressive numbers but Roofe is raising the bar at the moment."

Rangers had to do it the hard way against the Belgians as Scott Arfield netted a second half winner to secure the comeback.

And Gerrard has praised his side's character for making sure their heads didn't drop when they went behind.

He added: "I didn't see anyone with their heads down last night, everyone showed character and kept going. We need to keep this character going throughout the season.

"This group has improved immensely from the European journey we have had, I still think there is more to come and the challenge for me is to keep the squad healthy and offload players when required as the schedule is about to get more challenging over the next 6-8 weeks.

"We have done ever so well from the first day in Europe. It is an achievement that the staff & players are very proud of. You are never out of sight at this level and games are tough for the full 90 minutes and max out physically and mentally. It hasn't been easy for sure."

Gerrard revealed Ryan Jack is unlikely to be unavailable for the trip to Dingwall against Ross County on Sunday.

He said: "Jack is unlikely to be available for the weekend. Everyone else should be fine, a few minor knocks but should all make it."
