Steven Gerrard responds to Rangers criticism as he asks Nicola Sturgeon for understanding

Steven Gerrard has responded to the criticism Rangers have received in the wake of mass celebrations at the weekend.

Thousands of fans descended on Ibrox and George Square after the Gers’ first Scottish Premiership title win in a decade was confirmed.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has since told the club that they didn’t do “nearly enough” to ensure fans didn’t return home, and will hold talks with the club and football authorities with a view to making sure we don’t see similar scenes when Rangers face Celtic in a couple of weeks time.

But Gerrard has insisted the club did all they could in the build up to the weekend and has asked for understanding.

“I was asked by the club to remind fans to stay safe but I’m human, I can understand the reaction but moving forward we must remain calm and safe,” he told ITV News.

"It’s clear we were in constant chats with police to do all we could to make it as safe as possible but when you’re in that moment and you've been through that as fans and players, the work we've put in, I hope there is some understanding.

“I can understand the reaction, we are going through a pandemic... I can say from the bottom of my heart we did everything we could to calm that situation down.

“It’s the achievement it’s the historic moment, no one can take this away, in an ideal world we'd love fans there, if anyone deserves to be in the crowd it’s the two clubs most important to me.”
