Steven Gerrard responds to Celtic hysteria as Rangers boss makes 'rocket scientist' admission

Steven Gerrard admits life in the Glasgow fast lane means a manager can never live in peace.

Celtic boss Neil Lennon has been forced to rail against a "hysterical" reaction to his side's dip in form after three matches without a win.

Their Ibrox rivals - unbeaten in 16 games in all competitions this term - have established a six-point lead at the Premiership summit, but that could be cut to just three if Celtic win their game in hand.

It's taught Gerrard that you're never more than a few matches away from a crisis in this part of the world.

So, he's well aware the intense scrutiny Lennon is currently facing can flip across the city all too quickly.

He said: "I don't think you have to be a rocket scientist to work it out that whoever is in the best form seems to get a bit more peace in terms of scrutiny in the media and the questions that are fired at you.

"You get a couple of indifferent results and that certainly changes very quickly and the heat comes in a different direction. That's the way it is.

"That's what myself and Neil, or myself and Brendan (Rodgers) prior to Neil, have to live with.

"That's the job we are in. That's never going to change.

"I'm sure that it has been the same for many years and it will be in the future. I accept that.

"It is what it is at the moment. Obviously the team are doing well, we need to keep continuing that.

"But it is what it is."

Gerrard has welcomed new signing Bongani Zungu into his squad for the first time as the midfielder completed a quarantine period following his arrival from Amiens.

He said: "Very excited to have Bongani Zungu involved, it would have been a long two weeks for him.

"He trained today which was fantastic. He will certainly feel that one-hour session later today but he is smiling and it was great to have him here."

Rangers host Lech Poznan at Ibrox on matchday two of the Europa League on Thursday as they seek to build an opening night win away at Standard Liege.

The Poles eventually lost a ding-dong battle with Benfica in their opening fixture, going down 4-2 despite coming from behind twice.

And Gerrard insists they will pose real danger to his side.

The Ibrox boss added: "The Poznan Benfica game was very open and I have watched this match extremely closely.

"There could have been more goals in the game and was almost like a Basketball game with constant attacks.

"We will make sure we are organised and keep our shape as this team can hurt you."
