Steven Gerrard reacts to talk that he rejected the Newcastle United job

Steven Gerrard has dismissed talk that he has rejected the chance to become the next manager of Newcastle United.

As reported on Chronicle Live on Sunday night, Gerrard was on Newcastle's shortlist for the vacant managerial role but the club have not made a formal approach for his services.

The former Liverpool man shrugged off the talk of him turning down the job by quipping: "Fake news. Not that I’m aware of."

Gerrard is well aware that he would be on the end of some stinging criticism from Rangers fans if he decided to talk to Newcastle about the job.

The Scouser would also be under fire if he walked away from the security of life at Ibrox and swapped it for a move to the Magpies.

But Newcastle's search for a successor for Rafa Benitez goes on with less than a month of the transfer window remaining.

With the squad set to make the journey to China at the weekend for the Premier League's Asian Trophy, both Ben Dawson and Neil Redfearn are on standby to manage the team in games against Wolverhampton Wanderers then Man City or West Ham.

The squad has been bolstered by the return of Martin Dubravka, Freddie Woodman and Fabian Schar after they were afforded extra time off due to international commitments.
