Steven Gerrard reacts to Rangers sickener as devastated boss admits trophy record is 'not good enough'

Devastated Steven Gerrard admits winning one domestic trophy from nine is "not good enough" for a Rangers boss.

The Premiership champions were dumped out of the Scottish Cup by St Johnstone on Sunday night following a dramatic penalty shootout.

Rangers took the lead through James Tavernier with just three minutes of extra time to play before Saints keeper Zander Clark incredibly set up Chris Kane to stab home a last-gasp equaliser.

Clark then denied Tavernier and Kemar Roofe from the spot to send the Saints into the last four at Hampden.

Despite cantering to the league title this season, Gerrard concedes his team's record in cup competition simply must get better.

"Listen, we won't shy away from the importance of the game.

"It became a priority as soon as the league was done and we were out of Europe.

"We'll take responsibility for that. The reality is, we need to be better in cup competitions.

"We're getting to this stage too many times and getting stung. For example, St Mirren in the League Cup.

"In the final moments of games, four days ago we haven't managed the game well enough as a team and we paid for that, two points were taken away.

"That's a challenge for me, to improve in cup competitions and get a group that's capable of being better to give our fans what they deserve which is more trophies - not just one out of nine. That’s not good enough here”
