Steven Gerrard reacts to Rangers penalty as boss claims 'shirt pull' from David Bates

Steven Gerrard believes Fashion Sakala had his shirt pulled as Rangers were awarded their penalty against Aberdeen.

James Tavernier converted a late spot-kick to rescue a point for the Premiership champions after going two goals down to the Dons

Aberdeen boss Stephen Glass was dismayed by referee John Beaton's dramatic decision and pundits have been split on whether there was an infringement.

Sakala went down in the box from a Tavernier delivery and a foul was awarded against centre-back David Bates.

Gerrard refrained from giving a definitive verdict but says there was a "shirt pull" as the ball floated into the box.

He told Sky Sports: "Whether that's soft or not enough to be a penalty is not my decision. That's the referee's decision.

"He's given it and we've managed to get a point off the back of that."

Gerrard was more concerned with Rangers ' performance after early goals from Christian Ramirez and Scott Brown left Ibrox reeling.

Alfredo Morelos quickly reduced the arrears but the capacity crowd - who paid tribute to the late Walter Smith on an emotional night - were made to wait for the eventual equaliser.

Gerrard fears his team are suffering an identity crisis following another disjointed and sloppy display.

He said: “We need to get back on the training pitch and remind a few of what we’re about.

“We’ve forgot what we do really well which is move around the football pitch together with real good strong organisation and we’re aggressive.

“When we regain the ball we play with possession and style and tonight we forgot what we’re about and what we do and I need to fix that.

“We need to work hard, get back on the training pitch, reset a few individuals and hopefully when they start playing a bit better that will help the collective.

“But we need to start games better. We need to score first and play with more control and then we don’t have to complain about referees about people wasting time - that’s on us, that’s our fault.”
