Steven Gerrard ramps up Rangers consistency calls as he insists 'far worse' incidents are being ignored

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard claims "far worse" incidents than Kemar Roofe's controversial tackle have been ignored by authorities.

The Ibrox star is set to serve a two-game ban after a crunching challenge on St Johnstone's Murray Davidson was retrospectively cited by the SFA, despite the player being booked at the time.

Rangers failed in an appeal against the charge and issued a statement insisting there was "confusion" within Scottish football over which incidents are acted upon.

Gerrard believes SPFL referees do "a terrific job" but the club's issue remains with incidents being reexamined, a stance with which Celtic manager Neil Lennon expressed sympathy with his rivals.

Instead, Gerrard wants to see better support, including goal-line technology, for the officials on the pitch.

He said: "There are far worse situations and challenges that don't even get looked upon. That's not right and we need to have a level of consistency.

"We must trust and support referees otherwise you’re going to have inconsistencies.

"The referees do a terrific job considering they are part-time but if we can give them more support financially to become full-time and introduce goal-line technology it will help improve the game for everyone in Scotland."

Rangers host Kilmarnock, now under new gaffer Tommy Wright, on Saturday as they look to re-establish a 21 point gap over Celtic at the Premiership summit.

Gerrard's side slipped to a disappointing draw at bottom side Hamilton Accies last week and the manager expects a reaction.

He said: "We know we haven't performed to our levels and really looking forward to seeing the reaction tomorrow. The players have been incredible up to this point and they've trained very well this week.

"Kilmarnock will be a tough game and they will certainly improve and get better under Tommy in the coming weeks."
