Steven Gerrard puts Rangers brakes on Kemar Roofe starting spot talk as Ibrox boss details cautious approach

Steven Gerrard is adamant that Kemar Roofe 's wondergoal against Standard Liege doesn't mean he becomes an automatic starter in the team against Livingston.

Roofe's 55 yard strike went viral around the world last night after the sensational moment was clipped up for social media.

The Englishman had been out for a month with a calf injury before he returned to the action with 15 minutes remaining and his lob has become one of the most talked about moments from the week's European action.

But Gerrard is keen to ease his player back into action in the proper manner and he insists the moment of magic won't make him rush the former Leeds star back.

Gerrard - speaking ahead of Sunday's Ibrox clash with Livingston - said: "We need to get Kemar up to speed. I don't think we've yet had him at 100 per cent.

"He got really close before his latest injury but then he missed a month, which was frustrating for everyone.

"I think everyone is just expecting me to plunge him into every single game because of the goal last night. That won't be the case. We'll treat him with care and get him up to speed at the right time.

"When he's ready he will come back into the team."

Roofe's goal has been viewed online more than 2.5million times already and Gerrard has told the former Leeds and Anderlecht forward to get used to seeing the replays for years to come.

"It was a world-class moment, a moment of genius," he said. "I have seen the goal many, many times in terms of execution, I have seen (Luis) Suarez do it, (Wayne) Rooney do it, Xabi Alonso do it a couple of times.

"There have been many more throughout the leagues around the world, but if you go back from the strike and the execution, it is where he has collected the ball. He holds two really strong challenges off, then he goes past a third defender and then to have the vision and audacity to then execute it, for me it is probably the best that I have seen live.

"I am trying to think of a better goal and I can't think of one. Listen, he deserves everything and he is going to see that many, many times during his career.

"I don't think he will ever beat that. If he does, I am looking forward to seeing it and I hope it is for me."
