Steven Gerrard provides Rangers first team hope for Glenn Middleton as he praises versatile youngster

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard admits Glenn Middleton's versatility could help him get back to being a first team regular.

The Scotland U21 star was a big part of Gerrard's first few months at the club but struggled out on loan at Hibs and Bradford last season.

Injuries have held him back so far this campaign but he played his first competitive game for the club since April 2019 and performed well in an unusual left back position.

He filled in there during pre-season as well and Gerrard was impressed by his performance against Falkirk as his side romped to a 4-0 win in the Betfred Cup.

With Rangers down to the barebones at centre back, it could see Calvin Bassey utilised as a centre back at some point over the next few weeks and that will open a slot for Middleton to cover Borna Barisic at left back.

Gerrard also knows he can do a job further up the pitch and said: "Glenn has been on loan and had injuries but he has been back within the group for four or five weeks now.

"He has been working hard and playing for an opportunity.

"We think he can do left-back, left-wingback or left-wing and it was a strong cameo from him."
