Steven Gerrard makes Rangers penalty decision as he lays down Alfredo Morelos challenge

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard expects Alfredo Morelos to start firing again after grabbing his first goal of 2020 against Hamilton.

The Colombian hadn't scored since the Premiership re-start but bagged his 30th of the season for club and country.

That helped Gerrard's side to a 4-1 victory over Accies that booked a quarter-final berth.

And the Ibrox gaffer hopes Morelos' getting off the mark for the year will see him go on another run of scoring form.

He said: “I think Alfredo looked sharp today. He'll be disappointed he didn't score two because he missed a good chance in the first half as well.

“But we saw signs of the old Alfredo. He was so powerful and undefendable at times.

“He ran through their defender to win us a penalty and was then in the right place to score his goal.

“He showed great power in his neck muscles to get it over the line.

“We need him firing again as quickly as possible. That goal could be what he needed.

“All forwards, especially number nines, thrive on goals so hopefully this will have done him a world of good.”

Rangers' first goal against Accies came from Scott Arfield's rebound finish after he missed a spot kick.

Gerrard's side have squandered four of their last nine spot kicks.

The manager revealed he's still looking for someone to step up to the plate and hinted that skipper James Tavernier might get back on pens.

He said: “I don't know if Scott's on penalties after that one. I liked his follow-in, though.

“We're still searching for this person to come forward from the front and become our regular taker.

“On the evidence so far, I might have to go back to James.

“We'll make that decision in due course.”

Gerrard's team now face a Premiership test at Kilmarnock in midweek as they continue their pursuit of Celtic at the top of the table.

But it's likely that he'll need to do without Croatian left-back Borna Barisic who came off injured at Hamilton with a hip problem.

Gerrard said: “He's a doubt for midweek. It's a hip flexor situation that we're hoping isn't too serious.”
