Steven Gerrard plays down Rangers title talk as he makes Roofe and Itten transfer vindication claim

Steven Gerrard insists it's too early for title talk after Rangers built a 16 point lead at the top of the Premiership.

The Ibrox side produced a second half comeback against Motherwell to seal a 3-1 victory over the Steelmen.

Kemar Roofe cancelled out Callum Lang's opener, before Cedric Itten climbed off the bench to put the home side ahead to complete the turnaround.

Roofe then put the game to bed in stoppage time as Rangers stretched their lead at the summit.

But Gerrard reckons it's too early to make predictions especially when Celtic have three games in hand.

He said: "We're in December, we're pre-Christmas.

"We'd obviously much rather be where we are but there are a lot of games in hand.

"We understand the situation as it lies but in terms of league form that's 10 on the spin now, it's outstanding.

"It's about us, for me. It's about us focusing on us and I can't ask for anything more from the players."

Gerrard praised Roofe and Itten for their clinical nature in front of goal and insists their summer transfer fees have been vindicated.

He added: "That's why we spend money on those players.

"We knew at the end of the season we needed to make changes and bring players in that are capable of stepping up in big moments, and Kemar was outstanding today.

"Ceddy does what he does, he's a bit of a pest and a nuisance. He chases lost causes, it was a fantastic header at the back post.

"A lot of people would have given up when the game was won but he keeps going and keeps going. I'm sure the fans will appreciate the effort he gave today."
