Steven Gerrard plans Alfredo Morelos Rangers reset as he backs referee over red card

Steven Gerrard admits he will need to have a talk with Alfredo Morelos after defending referee Don Robertson's decision to send him off against Motherwell.

The Rangers star was shown a second yellow after making an offensive gesture to home fans as he celebrated his goal.

That strike sealed the win but there was unsavoury scenes as objects were thrown in the aftermath of his celebrations.

But while Gerrard admitted the red card was deserved, he refused to put the boot into Morelos and insists his main man will come good again.

In general, the Colombian has grown in maturity but Gerrard insists his star must learn from his mistakes.

He said: "He was looking dangerous, he was causing their centre backs a lot of problems and had good back up in Joe Aribo , who was absolutely sensational today.

"I felt as if it was going to come but unfortunately this is his first minor misbehaviour since he’s turned a massive corner. That’s probably the only disappointment from today.

"We’ve got no complaints. He’s a human being, he’s young and I must admit he’s doing everything he can to improve in that area.

"Today is probably his first set back but we’ll reset him and go again but we have no complaints."

Rangers got their first win in four games and it was a big win against a Motherwell who have been in excellent form this season.

Next up is Hibs at Easter Road before a home tie against Kilmarnock and a trip to Celtic Park to round off a gruelling run of fixtures.

And Gerrard is targeting maximum points before the winter shutdown.

He added: "They're really important. We've spoken about this block of fixtures from the last international break to the winter break.

"We've had a lot of tough fixtures and a lot of away fixtures. The fixtures will be more favourable for us after the break so it's important that we keep trying to take maximum points before the winter break.

"We've got Hibs away now which is always tough but we've got an extra recovery today compared to what we're used to, a bit more pitch time to prepare and we'll have them ready for Hibs away. If we can go there and take full points then we'll be in good shape."
