Steven Gerrard pinpoints his Rangers 'biggest challenge' as he addresses season conclusion question

Steven Gerrard insists Rangers won’t be buying into the hype in their pursuit of glory.

Gers enjoy a four-point Premiership lead over 10-in-a-row chasing Celtic ahead of today’s clash with Livingston.

But the Light Blues boss insists lessons have been learned from last season.

After experiencing the crash and burn of the
last campaign which delivered no silverware, the Englishman is preaching caution and calm over the challenges that lie ahead.

Rangers have played one game more than the champions and Gerrard is adamant nobody is getting carried away by the impressive foundations for success which have been laid this term.

Gerrard said: “The biggest challenge for this squad of players is can they be in the same place for every game, no matter if it’s home or away?

“We feel as if we’ve got the right numbers and right players where we are right now. But the key is to not stand still and believe in any hype.

“Over the last couple of years we have tried to build something here and we’ll continue to do that. You can’t stand still or get carried away.

“It’s about trying to learn from our mistakes and get the players in the same place for every game. Treat every game with the same respect. They can’t pick and choose when they play.

“I think we’ve had questions since the first game of the season. You know and I know, the questions aren’t going to go away – from week to week, from challenge to challenge. We accept that.

“We know Livingston will be well organised.

“They’ll have checked us out the last time we played them away on their pitch. This time it’s Ibrox, it’s a
different pitch and game.

“In terms of questions being asked about me and the players, they’ve been there since day one and they’ll be here till the day I walk out the door.”

Last weekend’s Old Firm win racked up a 12th clean sheets in 15 games this season.

And Gerrard admits keeping Scottish football going throughout the Covid-19 pandemic could provide the greatest challenge yet.

But he insists playing politics isn’t his game as the government, SPFL and our clubs continue to plot the path ahead.

He said: “I don’t really want to get involved in answering questions about the politics of the game up here in Scotland. It’s out of my control and my remit.

“I hope all clubs are listened to. Let’s hope they make the right decision for the game – what’s fair.”
