Steven Gerrard pays James Tavernier Rangers tribute as he sends message to captain's critics

Steven Gerrard was loath to single out any of his players after a superb team effort won the points at Parkhead – but admitted he was delighted for captain James Tavernier .

The Rangers right-back has been on the wrong end of heavy defeats at Celtic and has recovered from an early-season form slump to reassert himself as one of the Ibrox gaffer’s main men.

Gerrard said: “He was outstanding in the game today. He came back for pre-season really tuned in and started the season really well. It looked like he was going to take up where he left off from last season.

“Then he had a wobble, a moment all footballers have. There was a dip in form and confidence was affected. He missed a few penalties, had a few bumps.

“But I gave him the armband for a reason, because I believe he can be a big player.

“He can help lead big results for this football club.

“I’ve been delighted with his response from the dip in form because he has played himself back into the place where we all know he can be.

“When he’s at it, he is some full-back.”
