Steven Gerrard opens up on Leeds United fan memories and Gary McAllister's reunion excitement

Steven Gerrard has lavished praise on Leeds United, Elland Road, its fans and its fightback from multiple knocks to establish itself in the Premier League once more.

The Aston Villa boss was speaking to the media ahead of tonight’s clash at Villa Park, where his assistant Gary McAllister would be among those most excited about the clash.

Gerrard played at Elland Road six times during his career, even in the same Liverpool team as McAllister on a few occasions.

It is little surprise to see Gerrard admit McAllister has looked out for this fixture more eagerly than him. The Scot played for Leeds more than any other club in his distinguished career.

In his six years at Elland Road, McAllister amassed 295 appearances, which remains more than the likes of Ian Harte, Nigel Martyn, Mervyn Day and John Sheridan.

Asked how much he was looking forward to the game, Gerrard said: “Not as much as Gary McAllister. He looks for this one more than me, but Leeds are a fantastic club.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for Leeds, I’ve followed them for many, many years. I was lucky enough to go and play at Elland Road on many occasions when I played.

“Great set of fans and a club that has took a few bumps, a few knocks along the way, but it seems to be back in a good place and I’m sure when they get everyone fully fit, strong and available, you’ll see Leeds push and push hard.

“Great club, great fixture tomorrow. I’m sure it’s going to be a really exciting game and we’re certainly ready for it.”
