Steven Gerrard on why he wants his Rangers players to take more shots from distance

Steven Gerrard says he wants his Rangers players to take more shots from distance.

The Ibrox boss was pleased with the number of times his players had attempts on goal in the 4-0 victory over Willem II.

He says he'll never moan at a player for backing themselves from distance, and says it's a feature of Rangers' game he'd like to see more of.

Gerrard was pleased with the performance of his side in the Europa League third round qualifier.

And he told Rangers TV afterwards: "There have been times where we haven't taken enough shots on, like Livingston for example. I was disappointed with our end product, and not taking shots on.

"I've never known a coach throughout my career. And certainly while I'm coaching, I'll never moan at a player for taking shots on. As long as he's in distance, as long as he backs himself.

"I'll only have a moan and a groan if people don't take shots on. So it was good to see that we took them on."

Rangers won 4-0 thanks to goals from James Tavernier, Ryan Kent, Connor Goldson and Filip Helander.

And while the scoreline made things look comfortable, Willem II did threaten Allan McGregor a number of times.

Gerrard added: "They are a good team. You could see that. They've got dangerous players, and they're always looking for that combination. They're looking for that one-v-one. Got a lot of creativity in the final third.

"Tonight was all about trying to control that, and restrict that. Keeping their top players quiet.

"I thought we didn't do it well enough in the first half. I thought we were lucky to go in at 2-0. It could have been 2-1, it could've been 2-2. It was end-to-end in the first half.

"We needed to sort our organisation our for the second half but the boys carried that out brilliantly."
