Steven Gerrard on the two Rangers players he pushed at half time to 'take the handbrake off'

Steven Gerrard admits he demanded his fullbacks "take the handbrake" off and play with more aggression during a half-time pep talk.

The Rangers boss saw his team improve in the second half after a frustrating first 45-minutes against Kilmarnock.

Goals from Kemar Roofe and Ryan Kent were enough to secure all three goals, and take the Ibrox side three clear at the top of the table.

Gerrard said he demanded more from James Tavernier and Borna Barisic at half time, and the duo delivered in emphatic style in the second half.

He told Rangers TV: "I pushed both full backs at half time. I felt they were playing with the handbrake on. I wanted them to be higher earlier.

"I wanted them to really take them [their wide players] back, but when they took the handbrake off I thought the full-backs were fabulous in the second half."

Gerrard mixed things up with his team selection, and sprung a surprise with four attacking players – Brandon Barker, Cedric Itten, Roofe and Kent – in from the start.

And he admits the tactics were to be slightly more direct.

He added: "We wanted the team to go a bit long early on because we were looking to try and get over the block, and get on some second balls.

"I had a little pop at them at half time. Asked for it to be a bit quicker, a bit more purposeful, and we managed to find the answers.

"It could have been a a few more in the end so I'm pleased with the result."
