Steven Gerrard 'on Newcastle United shortlist' as Rangers boss named as potential Rafa Benitez successor

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is claimed to be one of three names on a shortlist for the vacant Newcastle United job.

The Telegraph are reporting the Ibrox boss as one of the front runners to replace Rafa Benitez, who will be leaving the club on June 30 when his contract expires.

Nice boss Patrick Vieira and Manchester City assistant manager Mikel Arteta are the other two names on the Magpies list of options.

They are also reportedly keen on Bournemouth's Eddie Howe, but are unsure whether they would be able to lure him away from their Premiership rivals.

The Times report claimed Gerrard had rejected an approach from Derby as the Championship club make contingency plans after Lampard was confirmed as Maurizio Sarri's replacement at Chelsea.

But Rams owner owner Mel Morris said the claims he had approached Gerrard over the possibility of replacing Lampard as “absolute rubbish” when speaking to Jim White on talkSPORT.

Gerrard responded to the reports at Rangers ' summer training camp in Portugal earlier this week, saying he was focused only on the job at hand with Rangers.

He said: "I'm very happy. It's a privilege to be the Rangers manager and my focus is on the coming season.

"It's very similar to when there is noise around players. I ask them to stay focused on the job and that's what I'll continue to do.

"There's nothing really to add to it."

The Rangers boss also added he was happy at Ibrox and felt he was "very lucky" to be the manager of "one of the biggest football clubs you can manage.

He said: "I was very lucky and appreciative of the opportunity I got 12 months ago.

"I came in very focused in season one. Nothing has changed in my mind.

"I'm delighted to be the Rangers manager, I'm managing one of the biggest football clubs you can manage so nothing has changed in terms of my focus."
