Steven Gerrard on Ianis Hagi's Rangers future after impressive start at Ibrox

Steven Gerrard has urged Ianis Hagi to keep performing if he wants to earn a permanent deal.

Rangers have first option to buy the Romanian who has been a revelation since arriving on loan from Genk in January.

Hagi has quickly become a fans’ favourite and was instrumental in their Europa League last-32 victory over Braga.

He’ll be available for around £4million in the summer if Gerrard wants to buy him.

But while the Rangers boss is delighted with the kid, he insists EVERY player in the squad is fighting for their future.

Gerrard said: “We don’t have to push the ball to get it rolling on Hagi just yet. We’ve got time.

“He’s had a strong impact and we’re delighted with him on and off the pitch.

“He’s professional, a student of the game and has quickly picked up how we want to play.

“People talk about the assists and goals but positionally he’s clever.

“His work-rate, his attitude – he has ticked every box.

“It’s a fantastic position to be in, knowing we have first option on him. But I don’t have to make a decision now.

“Does he have to maintain this level of performance?

“All the players do if they want to stay.”

Hagi missed a penalty against Braga in Portugal but his assist for Ryan Kent’s winner was top drawer.

Gerrard said: “It was a moment of genius, all about vision and executing a really difficult pass.

“Being a midfielder myself I appreciated that moment. After missing a penalty, some players would have gone missing – but Hagi stepped up and provided a moment that helped us win the game.”
