Steven Gerrard names the 5 Rangers Covid rule-breakers as he feels 'personally let down' by lockdown partygoers

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard insists he feels "personally let down" by the club's Covid rule-breakers who attended a party just days before the club's last 32 tie against Royal Antwerp.

The Ibrox boss has confirmed that five players - Bongani Zungu, Nathan Patterson, Calvin Bassey, Dapo Mebude and Brian Kinnear - have all been removed from the squad and are now self-isolating.

It leaves the futures of all five uncertain, with Zungu and Bassey all having just joined the club in the summer window while young right-back Patterson recently signed a long-term contract extension.

Record Sport understood the SFA were well aware of the breaches but decided to hold fire. However, they will now trigger an investigation involving the compliance officer and the club before citing the individuals involved.

Speaking to Rangers TV, he said: "First and foremost we have to acknowledge that five of our players have been involved in a breach of the Covid regulations.

"Which, from the top of the club to the bottom, we're all really disappointed in.

"That will be dealt with internally, the players will be fined and we are in dialogue with the SFA and the Government moving forward to find the solution in terms of those boys.

"They've been removed from the club and the squad for now on a short-term basis while they isolate and I'll be sitting down with those boys face to face once we're allowed to do so.

"We'll certainly move forward from it, we're at a critical stage in terms of the games coming up and where we are as a club.

"It won't affect us as a group, I've been absolutely delighted with the group in terms of their application, I feel personally let down by recent events but I'm trying to move forward and focus on the important thing which is preparing for a huge game against Antwerp."

Gerrard went on to name the players who have before forced into self isolation following the protocol breach.

He added: "Bongani Zungu is involved, Nathan Patterson, Calvin Bassey, Dapo (Mebude) who is part of the academy and is on loan at Queen of the South at the moment, and a young goalie who is in the academy but has spent some time in the first team at the moment, Brian Kinnear."

The incident is the second involving Rangers players this season. In November 2020, Jordan Jones and George Edmundson were served seven-game suspensions for breaching guidelines by attending a party in Glasgow.

Similar infringements resulted in suspended three-game bans being handed out to eight Aberdeen stars who broke rules by attending a Granite City pub in September.
