Steven Gerrard mural unveiled near Anfield after Liverpool legend wins fan vote ahead of Sami Hyypia and Jerzy Dudek

Liverpool fans voted in their thousands for Steven Gerrard to feature in the next mural to be painted in the city and the stunning artwork is now complete.

Displayed on the side of The Sandon Complex, the birthplace of the football club in 1892, the mural shows Gerrard celebrating one of his 186 strikes for the club.

Reds supporters were given the power to choose the subject of the mural from a list of five club legends - Bob Paisley, Sami Hyypia, Robbie Fowler, Jerzy Dudek and Gerrard.

Sportening, a new social sports app for fans, invited supporters to select their winner with Gerrard receiving 28,000 votes which was just over half the total amount.

John Culshaw, who has a number of pieces already around the city, was assigned to produce the artwork and it was this week completed meaning supporters attending next week’s Champions League group stage clash with Milan will be able to see the finished article near Anfield.

“All five of the legends are worthy winners but there can only be one mural. The fans of Liverpool Football Club have spoken and Steven Gerrard is their winner!” said Culshaw, the artist behind the piece.

“I’ve really enjoyed this process and seeing the final piece of artwork on The Sandon Complex.

“This mural joins many others across the city that honour some of the club’s best players.”

Kate Stewart, owner of The Sandon Pub and Complex, added: “Steven Gerrard is an LFC icon, there’s no doubt about it.

“It’s amazing to see John’s mural on The Sandon Complex and I’m delighted that Sportening organised this and asked for us to be involved.

“The Sandon will always be the birthplace of LFC and it’s absolutely fitting to have a true Scouse and LFC legend such as Stevie G with us.”

The found of Sportening, Ivan Klaric, said: “We have thoroughly enjoyed giving Liverpool FC fans the chance to vote and select their worthy winner.

“Liverpool’s new mural of Steven Gerrard looks fantastic on The Sandon Complex and we can’t thank John Culshaw enough for creating this incredible piece of artwork.”

Gerrard made a total of 710 appearances during 17 years with Liverpool, skippering the Reds to win the Champions League in 2005 as well as two FA Cups, three League Cups, the UEFA Cup in 2001, as part of a treble, and the UEFA Super Cup.
