Steven Gerrard makes Rangers promise to Walter Smith over Ibrox trophy lift

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard admits he's gutted Walter Smith won't be able to make it along to Ibrox on Saturday to celebrate 55 with the club.

The legendary boss has been unwell in recent months and Gerrard was desperate to share the celebrations with him after he had offered so much support during his time at the club so far.

And he insists he will ensure he has a photograph of the two of them alongside the trophy when it is finally presented to Rangers on Saturday.

James Tavernier will be the first Rangers captain to lift to Premiership trophy since David Weir did it exactly 10 years ago and Gerrard admits it will be a special moment at Ibrox.

That's why he feels it should be shared with people like Smith and his aim is to get together with the 73-year-old as soon as he can.

He said: "I've gone on record many times about how special he is, not just as a manager but as a man.

"Unfortunately, he's been unwell of late and it's a shame because I would have liked to have had him in the stadium on Saturday and have shared a photograph with him - but that time will come.

"It will be a special moment for me because Walter has really gone out of his way for me so the very least I can do is to share that moment with him.

"Sadly, it won't be this weekend but I'll make it my business to make sure that I have a picture with Walter Smith, myself and that cup."
