Steven Gerrard makes Rangers demand as he reveals delight at Kilmarnock win

Steven Gerrard has told his Rangers players to be braver in possession and kill games off after they laboured to a 2-1 win over Kilmarnock.

The Ibrox side were in complete control during the first half but failed to add to Scott Arfield's early opener.

That allowed Killie back in it and Stephen O'Donnell grabbed an equaliser before Connor Goldson's late winner.

But although Gerrard was happy with the three points after struggling against Kilmarnock last season, he wants more from his team going forward.

Joe Aribo had the quietest game of his Rangers career so far while Sheyi Ojo and Arfield also struggled to get hugely involved in the play.

And Gerrard said: "We’re delighted with how it finished. It’s a big three points for us. I thought we were comfortable for a lot of the game, we had a lot of control but then we go and give a silly foul away and they work a good set piece, you’ve got to give them credit for it.

"(Gary) Dicker, (Alan) Power and the big centre half came charging in our bodies then we fall asleep at the back post but I don’t think that would have been a true reflection on the whole game, although I thought it was going to slip away from us.

"Connor stepped up in the big moment and we’ve managed to do them on a set piece. It was all about set pieces and we’ve won 2-1.

"We just need to be braver in trying to get that second goal. We need to try and help ourselves by being more positive but we were just passing the ball for the sake of it in the second half without creating anything with it. We’ll look at it but from a set piece point of view we can’t be bullied like that."

Rangers conceded a lot of points last season with late goals for the opposition and Gerrard admits his side probably wouldn't have got a winner last season.

But he insists it's too early to say last year’s failing have been fixed and reckons Kilmarnock could have got a winner themselves.

He added: "It’s too early to say that, today it has gone our way but maybe last year we would draw that game, maybe we could have lost it. Wes has made a couple of good saves. Kilmarnock were themselves, we wondered before the game where they going to open and be expansive but when they play organised they are a tough nut to crack.

"They took 10 points off us last year so we’ve already beaten our total against Kilmarnock but it’s only one win, three points and we need to keep trying to improve.

"We don’t focus on other results we worry about us. When the fixtures came out we knew with the history over the last 12 months it was going to to be a tough game.

"It was a different type of pitch today, slower than the one they had before so we know there’s certain challenges when you come here so you have to do what you can so if it means winning ugly then so be it."
